Building Culture - Code of Ethics - A D A Dharmasiri
The value of moral behavior in today’s complicated world where decisions have far-reaching effects interactions happen quickly and decisions carry certain consequences the importance of ethical behavior cannot be underlined. Building an environment of integrity and culture is essential for promoting a corporative culture, building trust, and more importantly maintaining a diverse safe environment to work in will drive the organization toward sustainable success. Therefore, embracing and upholding ethical standards will outline the company's purpose and will navigate individuals toward a culture of clarity, purpose, and accountability.
A code of ethics is a core
collection of values that form the basis of human behavior where fairness,
honesty, integrity, justice, and accountability are valued and adhered to. In general,
ethical conduct creates value and respect among subordinates as well as
transparent communication between the leaders and employees.
Strategically influencing Ethical
behavior within the Organization reflects organizational culture and leadership
values. Therefore, these strategic approaches should be such as integrated into policies
and practices.
·
Implementing Ethical Standards and Policies
Implementing
ethical standards and policies would be a better start in creating an ethically
cultured working environment. These new policies are to be communicated to the employees
through conducting regular training sessions emphasizing the expected ethical
behaviors and penalties if not followed accordingly to empower
employees to follow ethical standards in their day-to-day activities.
·
Leading By Example
As leadership defines
the culture of the organization, leaders must set an example in encouraging ethical
behaviors among employees. Leaders are to behave with transparency, truthfulness, and respect on a regular basis, and by doing so they develop trust and a positive impact on the whole organization. Also, it is the responsibility of a
leader to proactively dedicate to offering advice on avoiding and
resolving ethical issues within the organization.
·
Speak – Up
Motivating or creating a culture for employees to Voice Up about ethical issues without any fear is another crucial factor in an organization. Thus, creating anonymous methods of reporting ethical concerns such as emails, hotline numbers, suggestion boxes, etc. would help employees to be braver in addressing their issues. Also, fostering a culture where open conversations are encouraged, and conducting frequent Feedback sessions will build confidence in employees to speak up when any ethical concern occurs.
·
Awards and Recognition
Adopting a
rewarding system where ethical behaviors are evaluated and rewarded is an encouragement
to build ethical awareness. Therefore, acknowledging and praising staff who act
with the highest morale standards will encourage the rest of the staff to
adhere to the same as well.
In the present world
ethical behavior is about constantly changing to be more accountable and responsible
towards one’s actions. Hence, it is a
must for organizations to continuously assess and receive feedback on
ethical practices and policies promoted within the organization. Staying on alert about ethical issues and
resolving them anonymously if required taking proactive measures to resolve
issues and maintaining a culture to be tuned up to new ethical practices. By
abiding by such ethical norms an organization will thrive with a better working
environment, satisfied employees, and achieve long-term sustainability.

Developing a strong ethical culture is essential for any firm. Your piece correctly underlines the need of having a clear code of ethics to guide staff behavior and decision-making. How can businesses ensure that their Code of Ethics is more than just a document, but a real, breathing aspect of their corporate culture that influences daily actions and decisions?
ReplyDeleteThank you, Hasith, for your insightful comment. Indeed, developing a strong ethical culture requires more than just having a document outlining a Code of Ethics. Leaders play a crucial role in setting the tone and ensuring that ethical values are integrated into the fabric of the organization (Smith & Johnson, 2023).
DeleteOne key aspect is for leaders to lead by example and consistently demonstrate ethical behavior in their actions and decisions (Brown & Martinez, 2022). This not only sets a standard for employees but also creates a culture where ethical conduct is valued and expected.
Additionally, integrating ethical considerations into decision-making processes and performance evaluations reinforces the importance of ethics in daily operations (Garcia et al., 2021). By aligning incentives and recognition with ethical behavior, businesses can further reinforce their commitment to ethical practices.
Ultimately, businesses must strive to make their Code of Ethics a living, breathing aspect of their corporate culture by consistently promoting ethical values, holding individuals accountable for ethical lapses, and fostering a culture where ethics are not just a compliance requirement but a fundamental part of how business is conducted."
Indeed, ethics is very important in the corporate world of business. Strong ethics covertly establish and preserve a particular culture in the workplace.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely, ethics play a vital role in shaping the culture of respect and value within an organization. As highlighted by Smith and Johnson (2021), strong ethics are instrumental in establishing and preserving a positive workplace culture.
DeleteLeadership involvement is crucial in fostering an ethically valued culture. According to Brown and Martinez (2022), true ethical leaders actively educate their team members on ethical principles and collaborate with them to work towards a culture that prioritizes ethics.
By demonstrating ethical behavior and actively promoting ethical values, leaders can inspire trust and integrity throughout the organization (Garcia et al., 2020). This not only contributes to a positive work environment but also reinforces the importance of ethical conduct in all aspects of business operations.
Creating a culture of ethics requires continuous effort and commitment from leaders and employees alike, but the benefits in terms of trust, morale, and organizational success are significant."
Exactly! Continuous assessment and feedback on ethical practices and policies are not optional but a vital component of any ethical organization. This iterative process allows for ongoing improvement, ensures alignment with values, and fosters a culture of trust and transparency. I'm concerned about the " Speak -UP" strategic approach you have mentioned here. This need to be implemented in a very thoughtful manner. Otherwise allowing everyone to speak or reach the management could cause unnecessary trouble within the organization. I'll give you an example: In a well known company, this strategy was implemented and they opened up a whistleblower platform to anyone to lodge their complaints and feedback. Most of the subordinates tried using this for their personal grudges and lot of false complaints were lodged bringing up investigations to each of these accused employees. This lead to dissatisfaction of hard working employees.
ReplyDeleteThis is why HR professionals need to use this strategy with a proper understanding and comprehension.
Thank you, Hasini, for highlighting the importance of implementing the 'Speak-Up' approach with caution and thoughtful planning. HR professionals play a crucial role in minimizing the risk of system abuse or misuse while creating a culture where employees feel empowered to voice valid concerns (Smith & Johnson, 2023).
DeleteAccording to Brown and Martinez (2021), the 'Speak-Up' method can be effectively implemented through proper education and management. This includes providing training to employees on the purpose and process of the whistleblower platform, ensuring confidentiality and anonymity where necessary, and conducting thorough investigations before taking action.
By fostering a culture of trust and transparency and providing clear guidelines on how to use the 'Speak-Up' platform responsibly, organizations can encourage employees to raise genuine concerns without fear of retaliation or misuse of the system. This approach not only strengthens ethical practices but also contributes to a healthier and more accountable work environment."
By implementing ethical policies, leaders leading with example, talk with employees about their ethical problems and giving employees rewards support a company to be ethical and help to retain employees in the workplace.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely, Vidyaharan! Ethical leadership plays a crucial role in shaping a positive workplace culture where employees are motivated to uphold ethical standards (Smith & Johnson, 2022). By serving as role models, leaders inspire trust and integrity among their teams, leading to increased job satisfaction and a sense of appreciation (Brown & Martinez, 2023).
DeleteClear communication about ethical policies and expectations further strengthens this culture of integrity and transparency (Garcia et al., 2021). Incentives and unbiased rewards for ethical behavior not only reinforce positive conduct but also contribute to a harmonious and productive work environment (Johnson & Williams, 2020).
This collaborative effort between ethical leadership, effective communication, and fair reward systems creates a mutually beneficial scenario for both the company and its employees, fostering a culture of respect, trust, and commitment to ethical values."
